Serengeti

There is no single moment when the Serengeti begins — it simply opens around you, mile after mile of golden grass beneath a sky that seems to belong to another planet. The Maasai called it Siringet, meaning 'the place where the land runs on forever,' and standing on the plains at first light, you understand exactly what they meant.

The Great Migration defines the Serengeti's calendar, but the park's wildlife is extraordinary in every month of the year. More than 70 species of large mammal roam freely across 14,763 square kilometres. Lions lie draped over kopjes in the afternoon heat. Cheetahs scan the horizon from termite mounds. Leopards hang in fever trees above the Seronera River. This is predator country — and the prey that surrounds them exists on a scale found nowhere else on Earth.

What surprises most first-time visitors is the silence. Between game drives, the camp is extraordinarily quiet — just the wind moving through the grass, the distant call of a fish eagle, the occasional whooping of hyenas at dusk.
